Malpelo

Malpelo, a rocky outcrop 506km out into the Pacific Ocean is sometimes optimistically referred to as the “Colombian Galapagos” but in reality is much less accessible than their Ecuadorian counterpart. Declared a UNESCO protected site in 2006, Malpelo is renowned for the amount of birdlife and sharks – including the whale shark – which make the immediate environs of the islands their home. If you want to visit Malpelo remember that this requires a 30 to 40 hours sea voyage from Buenaventura.
