With its skyline dominated by the grey and imposing Galeras volcano, Pasto is the capital of the Nariño department. Known for its ornate colonial churches and famous Carnaval de Blancos y Negros held in January of every year –Pasto is possibly the most Andean looking of all Colombian cities, recognizable for narrow cobblestone streets and mountainous vistas. Pasto makes for an excellent jumping off point to Ecuador and is also a starting point for visits to the impressive Las Lajas Sanctuary.
