Popayán or “La Ciudad Blanca”  due to the prevalence of whitewashed buildings is a perfectly preserved and easily accessible colonial era town famed for its UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized Semana Santa celebrations. Escaping the colonial centre you can make trips to the nearby village of Silvia known for its indigenous Tuesday market or out to the Purace National Park which contains everything from jungle lowlands to high altitude plateaus within its boundaries.
