Sogamoso, with its Temple of the Sun situated along the Iraka “great light on earth” valley, is found in the spectacular and still largely unknown region of Sugamuxi. Sometimes referred to as the “City of Sun” Sogamoso is a well located town from which to explore the surrounding area. This region is famous for its perfectly preserved colonial towns such as Iza, Mongui, Tibasosa amongst others. And, not to be missed is the Laguna de Tota, Colombia’s largest freshwater lake, measuring 12km by 47km, bordered by a spectacular white sand beach “Playa Blanca” where you can camp out under the stars at night after a long day of contemplating the spectacular views, walking or enjoying watersports.
Some say that the nearby Paramo de Oceta is the most beautiful high altitude plateau in the world with plenty of options for those wishing to trek, and who are we are to dispute this? Further attractions include, the ubiquitous thermal hot springs, a winery known for its dry red wine, the “Salto de Candelas” and large open swathes of high altitude vistas await.
